• Gift card recipients must know their card balance before they shop, as most merchants cannot determine the card balance. If they try to purchase an item of greater value then the card balance, the card will be declined.
• To purchase an item that costs more than the balance of the card, cardholders should first ask the cashier if a second payment method, such as cash, check, or other credit or check card, to pay the difference can be used. They will need to let the cashier know how much they will pay with each type of payment when they make their purchase.
