DFCU Financial Helps Swipe Out Hunger

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 2020 – Heading into this holiday season, recent projections indicate that food insecurity in Wayne County may increase to 22% for the general population and 30% for children. In Detroit, nearly half of all households are food insecure.

That’s why DFCU Financial stepped in to help provide much needed assistance to one of the largest food banks in Michigan - Gleaners Community Food Bank. As part of a credit and debit card swipe initiative with Mastercard, DFCU recently donated $25,000 to the food bank\. This amount will ensure 75,000 meals make it to family tables throughout Michigan.

“Gleaners Food Bank believes hunger can be solved, and we believe that too,” said DFCU President & CEO Mark Shobe. “As the Cash Back Credit Union, we've always worked to give back to our members and local community organizations. This year, we're proud to partner with Mastercard and Gleaners Food Bank to provide meals to families throughout Southeast Michigan.”

While the pandemic crisis has elevated the need for emergency food, it has also strengthened Gleaners’ ability to help those most at risk. Research shows that healthy food can treat and even reverse wide-spread health issues, including hypertension, cholesterol, and diabetes. Coincidentally, these are some of the health issues that make COVID-19 more deadly. Gleaners continues to be the link between nutritious food and hungry neighbors, which is only possible with the support of local communities and organizations like DFCU.

Gleaners was among the first food banks in the United States and provides households with access to essential food items and related resources that ensures 45 million pounds of food every single year to families at risk. Together with more than 500 partners, Gleaners continues to build capacity for Michigan’s emergency food assistance network and feed specific groups of people most at-risk.

A strong community partner, DFCU Financial continually reinvests in its membership with new branches and financial literacy education for all ages. DFCU Financial currently operates 28 full-service branches in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Brighton, Grand Rapids and Lansing. For more information, call 888.336.2700 or visit dfcufinancial.com.
